Quitting Smoking Cigs

Over the years I have attempted to quit several times with no luck. Started when I was 12 and I'm now going on 56...you can do the math. I've tried cold turkey, patches, gum, hypnosys and now this new drug called Chantix. Picked up the starter .5mg pills yesterday. Haven't read all the documentation yet. Origionally, I was told the 30 day script would cost around $700.00. The new pharmacist started doing some math and guarantees me it will be cheaper but didn't say how much. The first week is only $22.50.

looks like I take 1 pill for 3 days, then 2 for 4 more days and see how my body handles it....guess I'll start tonight after my dinner.

I am no longer stinky!! I took these meds and am now smoke-free going into my 2nd month! I smoked for 23 years and was completely die hard, right now, I could care less if I ever had another cig. I've weaned myself off the pills now and I'm still doing fine. Good luck to you!!
I remember as a kid trying to convince you smoking was a bad idea. I eventually gave up trying to convince you because, well, you're more stubborn than I am. Gee, I wonder where I got that from. ;)In any case, hearing that you're at least willing to try the new, snazzy, heavily-marketed pills made my day. I know that kicking this nasty habit you've had longer than I have been alive isn't going to be easy, even with the pills. You're going to need all the help you can get. Just don't be afraid to ask for it.
I started looking into this before the FDA approved the pills. I chose to wait till the taxman coughed up and good that I did at least for the cost of the pills. Both the counter girl and the Pharmacist said they have heard of some successes. Thanks for your Support. Good luck and congrats on your plight also.
I think the hard headedness goes back farther than either of us. I know your grandpa was worse than me. His father was the son of a Chippewa Indian Chief in Northern Michigan. So it may be part of the indian blood we inherited...which is probably to some degree the good part.
The good news is that even without the pills, I have developed the habit of not having that "after dinner smoke". So I typically work all day and come home and have my 1 meal and don't smoke until the next morning. I've been doing that for over a year now.
Bought myself a cat food dish also the other day to sit in front of the monitor...sunflower seeds in one side and empty shells in the other. I figure at least with the seeds I won't gain much weight unless I REALLY overdue how much I eat of them.
So how is things going on this front?
Well let's say that i'm taking the pills. They make me feel wierd so I don't really like them. I just picked up a 3-month supply. Today was my first day to take the 1mg version 2x a day. I am smoking less than last week. Haven't actually bought any cigs though in a few days. So I guess things are improving a little.
I think it's wonderful that you're smoking situation is improving. Any reduction in your (what used to be) two-pack-a-day habit is a miracle! It's not like you'll be taking the pills forever. Consider the weirdness a short-term problem. The benefits will be worth it.
Being able to RUN from all the girls will be good! I get out of breathe too easy now. Actually that 2 pack a day grew to 4 packs over the years...alot of it burning up in the ashtray but none the less still alot.
Thanbks for the encouragement though. It is appreciated.
I think you'll find that the "weirdness" will pass. I felt a little funky the 1st week, but then afterwards the only side effect that I had was that my tongue felt weird. (I know, that's weird!) If things go for you like they did for me, this next week or so you'll start to feel like you're forcing yourself to smoke. I havn't been running from girls or anything, but I feel a huge difference in my breathing already. Hope you're a quitter soon too!
Wow, 4 packs a day is a lot! Given that cigs are something like $4-$5 a pack here (probably cheaper at Costco, though it's not something I personally look at), not to mention the long-term health costs of all that smoking, it sure makes those pills seem like a downright bargain.
