Don't you remember "I before E except after C and when it sounds like A as in neighbor and weigh?" Third or fourth grade. Given how illiterate a lot of people are these days, I have to wonder if they still teach that stuff.
I remember watching the movie Farenheight 451 years ago when it came out. In the movie, a firemans' job was to burn the books. It was illegal to own a book of any kind. In the end we saw the "book people" who memorized the books to pass on between generations.
Your generation may be the last to actually be taught things like that. The "New Math" is an example of where education is going. It's pretty sad.
