Gazebo Update - Solar Lighting

OK remember this project is an "on the cheap" DIY. I've been playing around with some solar lights as an option for stuffing the tops of the poles and keeping the water out and add some environmentally friendly lighting. While my original attempt worked, I came up with an alternative that's a little more sexy. The photo was taken this morning at daybreak from the underside.

The other day I found some $5 white LED solar lights that are roughly 1/3 of the size of the other plastic solar lights you may find for the garden. I got 6 of them and poked them in the poles. The other larger amber lights, look and fit better but I wasn't really happy with the looks using these either .

What I ended up doing is just removing the head of the lights and placing them on top near the center of the gazebo. Since they are a low profile you cant see them easily from the outside. At night, it directs the light through the screen better than the lights on the poles do. Also directs the light more directly into the center where it is needed most.

At present, the light is very soft and subtle. I'll likely add a few more of these. They also have switches on them to turn them on and off unlike the other lights I have. This means I could vary the amount of available light by turning some of them off.  I may experiment a little with them and tie them into a single low-voltage dimmer switch accessible from underneath.

I also received my hummingbird weathervane. That I haven't installed yet. And I also haven't painted the roof yet either. So the lights can't be even semi-permanently mounted yet but I do have a plan for that also that will allow for easy removal if they need to be serviced at some point.

This is One Big Pink Rabbit!

Huge and Unique

Finding huge and unique things via Google Earth is one of the most popular activities within the Google Earth community. This giant pink bunny (Google Earth coordinates 44.244273,7.769737) in Prata Nevoso, Italy, was built by a group of artists from Vienna, according to published accounts. It's 200 feet long and answers to the name "Hare."

Public Computer Safety

There may be times that for what ever reason you may be forced to use a public computer. Covering your tracks can be difficult....These are some of the areas you may want to address to be safe.

  • Delete Browser History, cookies, Temp Internet Files
  • Don't Save Files Locally
  • Don't save Passwords
  • Don't Do Online Banking
  • Don't Buy anything using Credit Cards
  • Clear the Page File.
  • Reboot or Power off the machine

Clearly, you may have difficulty performing some of these tasks from say a computer you rent time on for access. The kiosk software may have you litterally blocked out. But there may be a work around you can use even on a friends pc you may be using.

LIVE CD

There are several Linux distibution cd's that allow booting the computer from the CD and offer "almost" full use of a computer. The operating system loads in to memory and doesn't even need a hard drive. Providing the ethernet device is compatible, you should be able to surf safely because after you power off the machine...all traces of you are gone. These distributions often have OpenOffice and FireFox among other applications so you can get your basic tasks completed. Email of course being limited to being web-based only.

Personnaly I have had good luck with the Ubuntu Live CD available at Ubuntu.org. The Ubuntu team takes a stable version of Debian Linux and builds upon that. Debian is changing thier builds so frequently that you may end up with an unstable version. Ubuntu helps eleviate that issue.

Anyway, you can't get blamed for screwing up someone elses computer or have to worry your tracks will be left behind by going this route.

Just ran across these by accident this morning. They were submitted by a person in a video editing group I belong to on Yahoo. Classic Leon.
